MacTarnahan's Eighth Annual Keg Toss

Modern Brewery Age, August 4, 2003

MacTarnahan's Eighth Annual Keg Toss, held this year in downtown Portland, OR's Pioneer Square, raised more than $2,100 for Portland Public Schools arts and athletics. Local celebrities put on kilts and tossed 15.5-gallon kegs, hoping to earn top score and induction into the hallowed "World Keg Toss Association Hall of Fame." Mac Tarnahan's Brewing donated $100 in the name of each celebrity competitor to the school funds."I knew l was tossing for our public schools; it needed to be good," said KPTV's Good Day Oregon reporter Drew Carney. "But it was definitely my pre-toss grunt that earned me those extra inches." Before local celebrities hurled kegs, world-renowned Highland Game Athletes took their turn tossing, aiming to beat the 46-foot-6-inch world record, set by Highland Games professional Jim McGoldrick in 1998. This year's winner Ken Lowther came close to the world record, earning a 45-foot-8-inch mark. "We filled Portland's living room with hollers for dollars," says Brewery Patriarch Mac MacTarnahan, "We wanted every Portlander to come cheer for their favorite keg-tossin' celebrity." Traditionally held at MacTarnahan's headquarters, the keg toss moved this year to Pioneer Courthouse Square to center attention on the charity.
