Modern Brewery Age, August 21, 2000
Frederick Brewing Company has revived its eagerly anticipated Blue Ridge Hopfest Brown Ale. For the 2000 edition of Hopfest, Frederick Brewing Company's new Brewmaster, Andy Tveekrem, chose to celebrate the Vanguard hop variety. Vanguard hops are American grown in the Pacific Northwest. Vanguard is a member of the Hallertau hop family.
A noble hop, Vanguards offer fresh aroma and unique bittering flavors. As intended, hop, bitterness is high in this beer at an astounding SS IBU (International Bitterness Units). "Blue Ridge is an American style Brown ale rather than an English style Brown," says spokesperson Paul Abrams. "The purpose of Hopfest is to celebrate the bountiful harvest of our Pacific Northwest hops. Each year our Brewmaster selects a single hop variety and embraces it in every possible nuance.' Simply put, that means we put a serious emphasis on the hops to produce an original classic hoppy beer. Hops are utilized in every stage of the brewing process and then we dry hop the beer by adding hops du ring post-fermentation in the conditioning stage. This is the sixth year for Blue Ridge Hopfest." Abrams reports that Hopfest is available in 12-ounce longneck bottles and on draft in all Blue Ridge markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Southern United States.
