California company now recycles all types of boxes

Modern Brewery Age, Sept 8, 2003

A Los Angeles-based company called Boomerang is making cardboard boxes its business.

Last year, founder Many Metro left his executive post at an international technology firm to create Boomerang.

He said he recognized a secondary marketplace for used boxes, but realized it would take time and money to create the infrastructure and technology to pull it off. He wanted to connect people who needed boxes with people who had them, regardless of where the people were located. The challenge was to make it convenient, cost-effective, scalable and profitable.

Boomerang Boxes now contracts with businesses, realtors, property managers and movers across Southern California. They pick up boxes for flee, inspect, inventory and sell them to consumers for about 1/2 price. Any boxes that can't be used are recycled. This process is repeated continuously. "It's a win, win, win. Our suppliers are happy. Our customers are happy, and we're saving trees!" explains Marty. "The other day, a customer told me we were the best thing since canned beer.' That's quite a compliment in my book."
