Caption: Alaskan Brewing Co. of Juneau, AK, is once again releasing its limited-edition Smoked Porter, made with locally smoked malt. According to Geoff Larson, brewmaster and founder of Alaskan Brewing Co., smoked malts have been traditional in Alaska, when many early brewers dried and roasted their malt over fire, creating a smoked malt character. "Some breweries in Alaska had their own malting companies," says Larson. "They would roast and dry their own malts over fire, hence the smoky flavor and aroma." Brewed only once each year in small amounts, this limited edition beer can be successfully aged. Larson says. "Aging allows a unique blend of plum, raisin, and sherry notes to emerge as it continues to develop in the bottle," he reports. Distribution in AK, WA, ID, MT, WY, CA and NV.
