Boddington's brewery workers appeal to EU

Modern Brewery Age, Nov 29, 2004

Workers at the Boddington's Brewery in Manchester, England have applied to the European Union to protect the Boddingtons beer brand in an effort to keep the brewery open.

Brewery owner Interbrew plans to close the 226-year-old brewery and shift production to a facility in Wales.

The EU has the power to give products geographical protection. So, just as champagne produced in Champagne can use the name, the workers hope that Boddington's will be ruled exclusive to Manchester.

A union spokesperson said that a local lawyer who specializes in intellectual property rights had suggested the plan.
