Nolen to take over as CEO of Capital

Modern Brewery Age, Jan 26, 2004

Carl J. Nolen will take over as president and CEO of the Capital Brewery of Middleton, WI, on Feb. 2, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Most recently, Nolen served as divisional sales manager for M&L Brands in Eau Claire, WI, a Miller wholesaler. He was also general manager of Central Beer Distributors in Mosinee, WI, and had previously held management jobs at Coors Brewing Co.

"I'm a beer guy who's coming back to Madison," Nolen told the Journal. "This is a brewery that produces well-known, high-quality products."

Nolen will succeed Tom Fuchs, who left last August.

Capital Brewery finished the 2003 fiscal year with a $176,000 net loss even though sales were $300,000 ahead of the previous year. According to the brewery, the tough numbers were the result of some unforeseen expenses, including the bankruptcy of a distributor, which left the brewery with some uncollectible debt. In the 2002 fiscal year, Capital Brewery had a $61,000 profit. Brewery executives said they expect the current fiscal year to be "slightly profitable."
