Coors recognizes top college programs

Winners in the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) competition, which recognizes outstanding alcohol education programming, were recently announced by the event's sponsor, Coors Brewing Co.

Each year in October, 3,000 colleges and universities across the nation join in efforts to increase alcohol awareness through participation in NCAAW. All participating schools are eligible to enter the competition for awards.

This year, six institutions were recognized for sponsoring progressive alcohol awareness activities including, Illinois State University, Bloomington, IL; South Suburban College, Chicago, IL; Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX; The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA; University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK; and the University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO.

The six winning institutions received $1,000 grants, as well as plaques commemorating their achievements.

Institutions were judged and awards presented based on four criteria: variety and creativity of activities; level of campus participation; quality of activities; and extent to which the week's activities provide a foundation for year-long programming.

"Across the board, Coors supports programs that encourage people to make good decisions about drinking," explained Ben Mason, Coors' director of alcohol issues. "NCAAW is a good example of a program that addresses those issues for college students. We're pleased that the majority of college students are making safe, legal decisions about drinking, and we hope the numbers of those students continue to grow."
