A-B achieves record sales in first quarter

Anheuser-Busch Cos., Inc., piled up record sales and earnings for the first quarter of 1990, according to president and chairman of the board, August Busch, III.

"We believe this strong performance reflects our continuing success in implementing our primary business strategies and the solid financial position of the company," Busch said when announcing first quarter results.

Anheuser-Busch, Inc., also saw record beer sales during the first quarter. Sales to wholesalers were 20.1 billion barrels, an increase of 2.9 percent over the 19.6 million sold during the corresponding period in 1989. An even greater jump was seen in sales of wholesalers to retailers--a sign of consumer demand--which was more than four percent ahead of sales in 1989, Busch said.

"The company's beer sales volume growth for the first quarter is attributed to the unqualified success of the Bud Bowl II promotion and the ongoing efforts by our remarkable employee and wholesaler team," Busch said. "These results reinforce our conviction that by meeting competitive price promotion levels, consumers will make their brand selection on the basis of quality and value and choose Anheuser-Busch products."

First quarter sales results were not significantly affected by the introduction of Bud Dry, Busch explained, since it was only recently rolled out nationally.
