California officials back Century Council

Modern Brewery Age, Oct 26, 1992

California Governor Pete Wilson joined John Gavin and top state and community leaders to announce their involvement in the Century Council's statewide program to attack drunk driving and underage drinking problems among the state's Hispanic population.

The program, "Si toma, no maneje... If you drink, don't drive," is currently funded by the council.

A central component of the program is a point-of-sale campaign provided free to bars, restaurants and convenience stores throughout California. The campaign features Spanish-language posters, refrigerator case stickers, change mats, among other items.

"We are delighted to work with Governor Wilson and the other distinguished officials and community leaders represented here today," noted Gavin, the Council's chairman. "Partnerships such as these are critical if the Council is to realize its goal of charting new territory in combatting drunk driving and underage drinking problems.

"California Hispanics have long been neglected on these issues," Gavin went on, "and we are proud to join the others to provide this vitally needed service."

Commenting on the program, Gov. Wilson said, "I applaud John Gavin and the Century Council for their efforts to reduce drunken driving and illegal purchases of alcohol by minors. The community-wide approach they have led is the best possible solution to stopping abuses of alcohol and, most importantly, saving lives."

Gavin said the Council will work with state and local agencies, community and religious organizations, trade associations and private businesses to distribute the point-of-sale materials. Other activities to be undertaken include public service announcements, school poster contests, billboards, training videos, as well as special events.

Late in 1991, the Century Council assumed funding of the groundbreaking program--originally established in 1989 by the California Office of Traffic Safety to address driving under the influence of alcohol among Hispanics.
