Redback Wheat Beer making big splash on American shores

The Original Redback Wheat Beer, one of the top-selling specialty beers in Australia, has arrived in the United States. Gambrinus Importing Co. has been named the exclusive agent for the brew, which is produced at Matilda Bay Brewing Co., in Fremantle, Australia.

"We're truly excited about bringing Redback to American beer drinkers," said Gambrinus' president Carlos Alvarez. "Redback is brewed in the authentic tradition of Bavarian-style wheat beers for a truly great, distinctive flavor. One taste sets Redback above all other imports."

Initially, Redback will be distributed through supermarkets and liquor stores in Southern California and will be available in upscale bars and restaurants. By the end of 1992, Alvarez explained, Gambrinus expects to import Redback for 30 states, with full national distribution to follow soon after.

What sets Redback apart is its authentic European weizen style of brewing, which involves using a high percentage of malted wheat to malted barley, according to importer's president.

Redback has a golden hue, a creamy head, and an appetizing hop and malt aroma. The result is a soft malty flavor that is full on the palate, yet fresh and crisp, with ample zest and a clean finish.

"Redback is a tremendously popular beer in Australia," Alvarez said. "With its distinctive taste and unique packaging, Redback will appeal naturally to discerning American beer drinkers."
