New Zealand Calling

Wines & Vines, Dec, 2000 by Larry Walker

In an effort to find out what New Zealand Sauvignon blanc is all about, I left Burgundy behind and went to a San Francisco tasting of more than 125 New Zealand wines, about half of them Sauvignon blanc, many from the 2000 vintage.

I came away convinced that if Sauvignon blanc is going to take off (as it seems more and more folks are predicting) the New Zealand style will be the trailblazer. The wines were fresh and lively with very few cases of obvious oak. They retained that brilliant Sauvignon blanc fruit and seemed to have stepped back a bit from the cat's piss model.

It was also surprising to see how many wines from New Zealand are now available in the U.S.
