B.C. winemakers drown in tank

Wines & Vines, Jan, 2003

Silver Sage Winery owner Victor Manola, 41 and winemaker Frank Supernack, 47 drowned in a 2,270-liter fermentation tank Nov. 10 after Manola fell in and Supernack tried to rescue him. Manola's wife Anna drained the tank, which was three-quarters full, but it was too late to save the men, who apparently had been overcome by fumes.

It took several hours for workers to cut through the tank to recover the bodies. Silver Sage is located in Oliver, B.C. in the Okanagan Valley. At least three local winemakers have promised to help get the Silver Sage vintage to market.
