Wine.com Fires 75

Wines & Vines, Feb, 2001

Wine.com, an online retail wine company, has fired 75 employees following the completion of the company's merger with WineShopper.com. The layoffs represent about a 25% staff reduction, from 310 employees to 235, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Co-founder Peter Granoff asserted that the layoffs are not part of the crashing dot com sector but were because of overlapping staff positions following the merger.

Granoff said that sales grew by 300% last year. He declined to provide specific sales figures on Wine.com, which is privately owned, or to comment on rumors that the company might be running short of capital.
