Gusto 2001 Sauvignon blanc

Wines & Vines, April, 2003

When most (sane) winemakers finish with the mad frenzy of harvest, they're more than happy to slow things down a bit and become reacquainted with things like sleep, the sofa, maybe even friends and family. But not Guy Davis of Davis Family Vineyards. This man is something of a harvest junky. Each year, when he's finished with the Russian River harvest, he heads for the Southern Hemisphere to do it all again-sometimes in Chile, sometimes in New Zealand.

The resulting wines are bottled (quite attractively) under his new "international label," known as Gusto. So far he's made two Gustos: a Malbec blend from Argentina and a Marlborough Sauvignon blanc. We recently tasted the Gusto 2001 Sauvignon blanc ($16), and thought it was pretty damn good. It's got all the crisp, lemon/grapefruit character the region is known for, with a hint of tropical fruit flavor for good measure. Maybe we won't recommend that 12-step program for Guy's harvest addiction after all.
