Washington Boost

Wines & Vines, June, 2001

* A new study conducted by Motto Kryla & Fisher shows that the Washington state wine industry is a major player in the state's economy with a $2.4 billion impact and statewide workforce of more than 11,000.

The Washington industry has more than doubled in size during the past decade and ranks second nationally in total wine production. Currently there are approximately 29,000 acres of winegrapes and 162 wineries producing 4.9 million cases (58.7 million 750 ml bottles) of premium wine, a retail value of $575.9 million.

The study found indirect effects of the wine business--distribution, retail, export of wine--throughout the state economy, were valued at $892 million. Also, the wine industry economically impacted tourism, marketing and promotion, financial institutions, and government tax revenues and license fees. An additional $73 million in revenue is accounted through wine related taxes and licensing fees.

"The industry's commitment to making quality wines is the foundation for our economic success," said Steve Burns, executive director of the Washington Wine Commission, located in Seattle. "Our wines are being recognized by top critics around the world."
