Juanita Swedenburg died June 9

Wines & Vines, August, 2007

Juanita Swedenburg, who took the case for direct interstate wine shipment to the Supreme Court and won, died at her home in Middleburg, Va., at age 82. After long careers abroad in the U.S. Foreign Service, she and her late husband, Wayne, purchased Valley View Farm in 1976, where they planted vinifera grapevines.

A founder of the Vinifera Wine Growers Association, she used her passion for wine and liberty, enlisting the Institute of Justice to fight for the right to ship her wines out-of-state, resulting in the Supreme Court's historic decision in 2005. She is survived by a son, Marc; a granddaughter, and a brother, Laurence Nutt.
