Wines & Vines, Sept, 2008

The American Society for Enology and Viticulture-Eastern Section presented Dr. Thomas Henick-Kling with its outstanding achievement award at the 33rd annual conference held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel near St. Catherines, Ontario, from July 14 to 16. Henick-Kling was recognized for his years of service as head of Cornell University's enology program at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, N.Y., and his contributions to the wine industry in New York, the East, nationally and internationally. Currently the director of the National Wine & Grape Industry Centre at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia, he had returned to the Finger Lakes region of New York for a brief visit.

Three other honors were awarded at the banquet. Linda Jones McKee and Hudson Cattell of Wine East received honorary lifetime memberships in the Eastern Section in recognition of their contributions in the fields of enology and viticulture. Arthur Roberts, owner of Arton Glass and Ceramic Imprinters in Lively, Va., was given a distinguished service award for his support of the scholarship program and supplying engraved glasses free of charge for this and many other conferences.

Approximately 114 people attended the annual meeting, which began with a tour of the Niagara Wine Region on July 14 and continued July 15 with contributed and student paper technical sessions. The two winners of the student paper competition each received $500. The award for the best paper in enology, sponsored by Lallemand Inc., went to Denise Gardner, a student of Bruce Zoecklein at Virginia Tech. The award for the best paper in viticulture, sponsored by National Grape Cooperative, was given to Rhiannon Plant, a student of Wendy McFadden-Smith at Brock University.
