Mansfield joins Cornell; Enologist finishing Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota

Wines & Vines, Sept, 2008

Anna Katharine Mansfield, currently the enology project leader at the University of Minnesota, has been named assistant professor of enology at Cornell University's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, N.Y., effective Jan. 1, 2009. Mansfield earned a master's degree at Virginia Tech in 2001 and expects to receive her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota this December. Her thesis topic is volatile compounds and Frontenac. In addition to being involved in experimental winemaking to support the breeding program at Minesota, she has served as outreach to the state's wineries and has taught introductory courses in enology and viticulture.

In commenting on Mansfield's appointment, Thomas J. Burr, the station's director, noted that the Geneva station recently has appointed a number of excellent faculty members at the assistant and associate professor levels. In 2007, Ramon Mira de Orduna Heidinger, Gavin Sacks and Justine Vanden Heuvel joined the faculty to do research at Geneva and teach in the undergraduate degree program on the Ithaca campus. Mansfield and Chris Gerling, who was appointed earlier this year, both will have research and extension responsibilities. Burr added that he is very excited about the new expertise these new faculty members are bringing to the station.
