NIAAA breakthrough - moderation grants

Major areas covered by the grants include:

* Cardiovascular disease. Studies will investigate ethanol's role in myocardial recovery and survival; its protective role in heart disease; the use of new techniques to measure the effects of ethanol on high-density lipoproteins and beverage-specific effects on stroke;

* Osteoporosis. Studies will investigate the effects of consumption on bone cell turnover and bone density, as moderate consumption may prevent osteoporosis in certain age groups;

* Women's Health Issues. Studies will investigate the effects of consumption on estrogen levels in post-menopausal women;

* Medication/Supplements. Studies will assess the impact of ethanol/ drug interactions on mortality among the elderly;

* Overall Health Status. One of the largest studies will be a five-year investigation to assess the effects of moderate consumption on coronary health disease, breast cancer and osteoporosis.
