More good reading

HR Magazine, Jan, 2007 by James L. Ramsey

In reference to "Read any Good (Non-HR) Books Lately?" (September), I just finished the following book, which I believe has some good HR crossover ideas: Applebee's America: How Successful Political, Business, and Religious Leaders Connect with the New American Community, by Ron Fournier, Douglas B. Sosnik and Matthew J. Dowd (Simon & Schuster, 2006).

Many people are familiar with the Applebee's advertising theme of being in your neighborhood. This connection to local people has been part of the success of this restaurant chain.

The authors are ready for more focus on policy and clear communication in business, politics and religion. They cover a broad spectrum of beliefs represented by a former Clinton aide, a former Bush-Cheney campaign lead and an independent.

This book is about how to connect with real people in America to get your message directly and clearly to the public. It is not just political, although it has many insights into campaign techniques. There are also great insights for both business and religious leaders on how to successfully communicate with their communities. It also breaks some myths about communication in each of the areas. It is well written and has concepts that could be beneficial to HR professionals.
