Employers and workers slow to embrace health savings accounts

HR Magazine, April, 2005 by Kathy Gurchiek

There is increasing interest in consumer-driven health plans, but HSA enrollment is low, with only 3 percent of those offered an HSA enrolling, Hewitt Associates found in looking at 2005 client open enrollment results.

However, using online tools such as health plan comparison charts and health care spending account calculators for help in making health care decisions has made an impact, according to a study by Hewitt Associates released in February.

Some employers are treading cautiously.

In an SHRM online poll released Sept. 14, 2004, of 250 randomly selected HR professionals, 18.5 percent said their organization offers HSAs, while others were holding back.

"We don't want to be the 'guinea pig' and would like a better history of other employers who have installed an HSA plan," a respondent said.
