Some management philosophies are born in think tanks, while others come from fish tanks. In FISH! Tales, authors Stephen Lundin, John Christensen, Harry Paul and Philip Strand admit they began developing their theory of motivating and rewarding employees after a visit to Seattle's Pike Place Fish Market.

While most Fish Market visitors are wowed by the quality of the seafood, what struck the authors was the elan with which the fishmongers performed their jobs.

After extensive observation, the authors developed the "FISH!" philosophy--a framework for energizing and motivating employees. It is based on four simple principles:

* Make work fun. Approaching work in a lighthearted way energizes staff and sparks creativity.

* Make their day. Memorable encounters--for example, performing a meaningful act of kindness or even just making someone laugh--can leave a lasting impression.

* Be there. Multi-tasking has its place, but when you deal with employees or customers, they want your undivided attention.

* Choose your attitude. Approaching work with a positive outlook can make a difference both in terms of how people perceive you and how you do your job.

FISH! Tales provides case studies that demonstrate how this philosophy can transform a workplace.
