Members get discount for 'dot-jobs' sites

HR Magazine, August, 2007

SHRM members are now entitled to a discount for registering ".jobs" Internet addresses that enhance their organizations' online recruiting efforts.

The .jobs Internet top-level domain, similar to .com and .org, was created in 2005 by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). SHRM supported the venture that gained approval for the domain, which permits web page addresses that link directly to a company's job openings and recruiting information--such as www.starbucks.jobs, www.Coca-Cola.jobs and www.unionpacific.jobs--because it believes that every HR department should own one to facilitate job seekers' navigation directly to company career pages. (For more information on e-recruitment tools, see "Survey: E-Recruitment Tools, Processes Coming of Age," on page 34.)

Registering such an address for a company has typically cost $150 or more per year, plus a one-time $35 fee for validating that an applicant is a legitimate employer that owns the company name.

But SHRM has negotiated a special price for members of $114.95 for the first year with no validation fee, SHRM officials said. The offer is available from Dotster, a Vancouver, Wash., company that is one of the largest ICANN-approved registrars that review and approve applications for Internet domain names.
