TEAMS 360 degrees Feedback offers varied ways to create feedback surveys - software package from TEAMS Inc - Management of HR Systems

HR Magazine, Nov, 1993 by Debra J. Cohen

What needs improving

The TEAMS 360 |degrees~ Feedback software cannot simply be purchased, installed and used. The user is somewhat dependent on TEAMS Inc. at least at the beginning. The manual is helpful in presenting the basics of the program, but a user will probably need help getting started and will need some consultation on how best to integrate this package into the development needs of the organization. TEAMS does not have a toll-free number for service or technical assistance, so lengthy long-distance calls or consultation ($3,000 a day) might be required. The software can be customized to meet your organizational needs, but this will most likely require more technical assistance either from TEAMS or from consultants.

The on-screen capabilities are limited to menus, and the only output you can get is in hard copy and finished form. For example, if you wanted to preview a report on screen before printing, this cannot be done. Moreover, if you want to verify your input, this cannot currently be done.

The survey items have been used extensively in organizations. However, neither the predesigned or customer created surveys have been validated. Since validity refers to the degree to which a test measures what it is supposed to measure, this may be an issue in some organizations. It would be particularly difficult if a survey were designed for one purpose, say performance evaluation, but then was used to determine the leadership capability of the person being rated. The lack of validity measures does not negate the usefulness or power of the software, but it does raise a note of caution to organizations for which this issue might be important.

Summary

The TEAMS concept is an interesting and potentially valuable way to assess employee behaviors in an organization. This software seems most appropriate for organizations with at least 100 managers. Using the computer is a powerful mechanism to gather and analyze data. Presenting the results does require an HR or organizational development manager who is knowledgeable about the use and importance of feedback and development. It would also require a commitment from top management and from employees to participate in such a thorough evaluation process.

When properly administered and used, this program can provide many benefits to the individuals being rated and to the organization. If your organization is committed to development, or perhaps wishes to become more committed to development, then it might be helpful to have TEAMS on your side.
