Aldo van Eyck 1918-1999 - Dutch architect - Obituary

Architectural Review, The, March, 1999 by Peter Buchanan

In recognition of his many contributions to architecture, van Eyck won the RIBA Gold Medal in 1990. Passionate about his various concerns, he was argumentative and could be very 'difficult', inspiring devotion and making enemies. He is still excessively demonized by many in the Netherlands. But anybody wanting to fully come to terms with twentieth-century architecture must get to know his richly complex ideas and buildings.

For the ideas, readers are referred to the famous issues of Forum, and for recent buildings to past issues of AR. Fortunately van Eyck is the subject of an exhaustive biography, Aldo van Eyck: the shape of relativity by Francis Strauven, in which his ideas and development are explored in depth.
