Architectural Review, The, Nov, 2000

The ar d awards form the core of the December AR, making it a special issue on this new and thought-provoking contribution to international architectural culture. Now in it's the second year, the award is made to architects under the age of 45, marking the moment when a new individual talent (or groups of collaborative talents) emerges with confidence and authority. This year, the award attracted over 700 entries from places as far apart as Australia and Austria, China and Chile. The jury (p31) chose three first prizes and commended 12 other from an astonishingly diverse range of projects. Overall winners included a church in Bolivia, a park pavilion in Japan, and a site construction wall, also in Japan. The jury was particularly impressed by the way the winning schemes all used conventional materials in radical and transformatory ways. Imaginative and life enchancing, the projects show how much can be done with great economy of means. Commended schemes included temporary works such as an ice palace in Quebec and a stage set in Portugal, family houses from Australia, the USA and Belgium and important urban interventions--for instance, both in Berlin: the Finish Embassy and a major multi-storey office hq.

As well as full coverage of the ar d awards, we shall also be publishing our regular features: interior Design, View From Design Review and Delight.
