501 Dane Architectural Systems

Architectural Review, The, Nov, 2000

In June 1996, a bomb exploded in the centre of Manchester, injuring over 200 people and damaging the city core. It shattered the footbridge across Corporation St connecting Marks and Spencer with the Arndale Centre.

It has been replaced by a new glass bridge, designed by Hodder Associates and Arup Facade Engineering, which has become a symbol of regeneration. Corporation Street is a canyon running north-south through the city and finishing in Albert Square. The bridge, spanning 19m, is a delicate hyperbolic paraboloidal structure with an expressed steel frame and glass membrane.

The glazing system from Dane Architectural Systems, designed by Hodder Associates and Arups, has purpose made elliptical stainless-steel castings, each clamping six triangular sheets of laminated glass panels.
