Of writing histories of design, there is no end, but a particularly thoughtful one has been produced by David Raizman. He traces design's courses from the royal manufactories of eighteenth-century France to today's electronics, plastics and star-designer self-indulgence. Raizman covers a wide range of design production, from textiles to graphics. This is Jean Dupas' Les Perruches (The Parakeets), from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industries Modernes of 1925. Raizman's History of Modern Design, Laurence King Publishing, London, 2004, [pounds sterling]24.95 is full of such unexpected and insightful examples.
