Spectrum preview

Architectural Review, The, May, 2004

Spectrum 2004, the annual international furniture and interior design show, takes place between 18 and 21 May in the Commonwealth Institute on Kensington High Street, London. For the second year running, the AR is mounting an evening lecture, which has been generously sponsored by Gensler. David Chipperfield, the distinguished and internationally renowned architect, will be talking about his work at 6pm on Tuesday 18 May. As in previous years, the AR will give an Award for Excellence to the best new product in the show, which will be presented on Tuesday night after the lecture, and which will be followed by late night live music. The panel of judges, chaired by AR Managing Editor Catherine Slessor, will include Ken Shuttleworth and Sarah Wigglesworth. Among this year's new exhibitors are Cassina, ICF, Amtico, Ares Line, Segment Systems and Bute Fabrics. The exhibition will be open from Tuesday 18 May to Thurs 20 May, 10.30am to 9pm, and on Friday 21 May 10am to 3.30pm. Pre-registration can be arranged from now onwards, by calling 0870 429 4420 or by registering on-line at www.spectrumexhibition.co.uk, and the AR Spectrum lecture will be organized on a first come first served basis. Beyon's Storage range has mobile and personal freestanding bulk storage. Designed by Stephen Phillips, it complements the Beyon Beam and system desking, and includes mobile tambour pedestals with a drawer for hanging files. At 960mm high, the unit is ideal for accessing a laptop while standing and is available in a variety of colours.

803 LESCO PRODUCTS

As part of a wide range of new products, Lesco will be launching Battista--a new coat and umbrella stand in diecast aluminium and epoxy-coated steel, designed by Michele De Lucchi and Sezgin Aksu; and Jasper, a new adjustable shelving system, designed by Pietro Arosio.

805 BUTE FABRICS

Designed by Catherine Murray, fabric specialists Bute will be launching Eriskay--a three-dimensional worsted fabric with an unusual textural quality. The honeycomb texture is recessed rather than raised, and is available in a wide range of colours from rich vibrant reds, yellows, oranges, blues and greens to more unexpected pastel shades.

STING chair uses the strength of stretched aluminium sheet metal to create a slimline, minimal chair that clicks together on a base of stainless-steel legs. Designed by Stefan Borselius and Fredrik Mattson, the chair comes in 185 colours from natural silver coloured aluminium to bright blues, reds and oranges with the option of a moulded polyurethane removable cover or armrests.

Liberty, the Humanscale chair by Niels Diffrient, uses the patent-pending Next-Mesh technology, solving shortcomings of current mesh backrests. Next-Mesh uses three panels of stretch mesh. When combined with the outer frame, these three mesh panels create a compound curve that matches the contours of the human back and has exceptional lumbar support.
