AR editor
Architectural Review, The, July, 2004
The world's most prestigious and respected international architectural magazine, first published in 1896, and now sold in 170 countries, needs a new editor. The present one is to retire.
Candidates should be qualified in architecture to at least Part Two of the RIBA professional qualifications (or one of its overseas equivalents), or they should have very extensive understanding of the practice and profession of architecture internationally. Knowledge of architectural history and contemporary building technology is essential. So is the ability to present the magazine in public, to lecture to learned audiences, to chair design juries and to contribute authoritatively to international professional debates and colloquia.
Applicants must of course have wide-ranging and well-honed editorial and writing skills, allied with an ability to seek out and arrange comment on the most important architecture in the world. This needs to be combined with commercial expertise and creativity to be applied extending the range of the magazine with new awards and events, and furthering its existing activities in electronic and other media.
Managerial skills in running and inspiring a small highly specialized and dedicated team are vital, and so is an ability to work within stringent budgets. Extensive travel is required. Passion, dedication, conviction, open-mindedness, generosity and humour are essential.
Please apply to Jonathan Stock, Publishing Director of The Architectural Review (jonathan.stock@emap.com), with a full curriculum vitae, and an explanation of why you want to be editor and how you propose to develop the magazine. Please also include an article (of not more than 1000 words) showing that you can write about a building or buildings with perception and understanding.
Closing date: 2 August 2004.
