Lighting: Rob Gregory lights up the products section
Architectural Review, The, June, 2005
TOBIAS GRAU
Soon by Tobias Grau comprises a number of identical moveable translucent parts that can be adjusted to suit individual lighting requirements. Two flat steel bands run through the spine of the lamp, which insulate power feeds and prevent the lamp from buckling. The transformer is integrated in the plug, and a two-stage switch allows for brightness control.

BELUX
BELUX presents CLOUD, designed by Frank O. Gehry. Available in various sizes and models, hanging, standing, floor and table. The irregular sculptural shade was first prototyped using deformed packing paper cups, stapled together. A multiply refined polyester material was later developed, which feels and looks like strong fibrous paper. Flexible, tear-free, flame-resistant and aging-resistant, this material is easy to clean. Sheets are stiffened using a transparent polycarbonate ring, with each shade made up of five, seven, ten or 14 of these cups. Once assembled, the lampshades are compressed for transport, allowing users to shape them for use. The fitting is integrated in a filigree wire structure, which also serves as a shade holder.

ARTEMIDE
Artemide's stunning 2005 catalogue includes many distinctive and beautifully designed light fittings, such as Pipe terra, by Herzog and de Meuron. Standing 2250mm tall, with its silicon stem, and polycarbonate diffuser, the fitting recalls the character of Herzog and de Meuron's data monitors for Prada. Here the free-form standard lamp can twist and turn to illuminate wall, floor or ceiling.

ERCO
Erco's new luminaire product group of uplights for wall installation are discreet and elegant. The three separately switchable, compact fluorescent lamps in red, green and blue, not only produce these primary colours, but also three secondary-colour pastel shades and one shade of white. Available in two housing sizes for tungsten halogen lamps, metal halide lamps or compact fluorescent lamps, the shallow recess depths of 80 and 96mm respectively enable problem-free installation in all usual cavity walls and interior design constructions.
