Real Estate Weekly, Oct 18, 2000
Barr & Barr, Inc., a New York City-based construction firm renowned for its expertise in medical facilities, is currently serving as construction manager on a $25-million multi-tiered project for The Brooklyn Hospital Center.
The project includes a new main and entrance lobby, women's health unit, ambulatory surgery unit with upgrades being performed to the neonatal intensive care unit, emergency department, radiology, nuclear medicine, pediatrics and non-invasive cardiology. In its role. as construction manager, Barr & Barr oversees the installation of crucial lifesaving equipment and all other medical devices for each department.
"One of the most challenging aspects of this project is the scheduling," said Barr & Barr project executive Eric Van Hook, who is overseeing the construction. "All of the areas we are working in must remain fully operational 24 hours a day. Every aspect of the project must be completed in phases to ensure that an adequate portion of each area remains operational. In addition, working inside a hospital requires us to undertake extraordinary measures to minimize disruption to operations and to maintain a peaceful and comfortable environment for patients."
In the interest of providing a more comfortable environment, Brooklyn Hospital's labor & delivery rooms are being renovated by Barr & Barr to create a relaxing atmosphere while providing state-of-the-art medical care.
Barr & Barr is installing new wallcoverings and flooring similar to those found in residential environments to helping birthing mothers feel more relaxed.
"We've worked for The Brooklyn Hospital Center for more than a quarter-century," said Donald Barr, president of Barr & Barr. "We're proud to be associated with one of the finest medical centers in the entire region. This particular project is just the latest effort in Brooklyn Hospital's continual mission to provide state-of-the-art healthcare while placing a premium on the comfort of patients."
