Kushner starts work on $600m NJ waterfront development

Real Estate Weekly, Nov 5, 2003

Westminster Communities, the development arm of Kushner Companies, has launched construction of Phase 1 of The Landings at HarborSide, the first new neighborhood of townhouses, luxury condominiums, shops, gardens and amenities within the 49-acre redevelopment along the city's waterfront. A wholly owned subsidiary of Kushner Companies, The Landings at HarborSide LLC is the designated redeveloper of the $600 million project, which represents one of the largest public/private partnerships in progress in New Jersey. "The Landings at HarborSide will be a model of new urbanism, combining the openness of the suburbs with the feel of a close-knit community and all the conveniences of city living," explained Sam Gershwin, president of Westminster Communities.

"It will become a community of waterfront townhomes and luxury condominiums, integrated with open space and amenities in the heart of historic Perth Amboy."

"Perth Amboy has a well-earned reputation for getting things done, and together with the highly respected Westminster Communities, we will build a center for arts, culture, education, business, shopping and living," stated Mayor Joseph Vas.

Phase I will include 462 units in five residential complexes. The first three residential buildings will be known as The Admiral, The Bay View and The Catalina. The community will feature a combination of residential styles and sizes with views of the Staten Island Sound. Amenities include landscaped courtyards, decked parking, shops, playgrounds and restaurants, among others.

In addition, the historic U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center located on the southern end of the redevelopment area is being renovated and will open in the spring as The Landings' sales center.
