NYU to build 12-story biomedical research building

Real Estate Weekly, Oct 31, 2001

New York University School of Medicine announced that it will construct a new 12-story, 200,000-SF biomedical research building in the heart of its campus along the East River in Manhattan. The new building will serve as the centerpiece of the school's plans to remain a leader in medical research in the new century. The building will contain laboratory space for the school's scientific investigators to conduct research in such key fields as cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurosciences and imaging, infectious diseases, and genetics.

The research building will provide a striking new architectural addition to the School of Medicine and the other buildings that compose the NYU Medical Center on First Avenue between 30th Street and 34th Street. Sited along the F.D.R. Drive and overlooking the East River, the building will contain a modern curtain wall system that will provide transparency and allow natural sunlight to flow into the structure. The school expects to begin construction in the summer of 2002 and open the building by the end of 2004. The architects for the building are Mitchell/Giurgola, LLP.

The building construction will be funded by a combination of state bonds and philanthropy, led by a generous gift from Joel E. Smilow, former Chairman, CEO. and President of Playtex Products Inc. The building will be named after the Smilow family.

The research building is the critical piece of a $750 million capital campaign that Glickman and the School's trustees, under the leadership of Kenneth G. Langone, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, launched two years ago.
