Real Estate Weekly, Nov 6, 2002

The Open Space Institute has recently acquired 93 acres of land, with over 2000 feet of frontage on the Hudson River in Garrison, New York. The property a landscape of rolling bills and meadows with magnificent views of the Hudson River, is rich in history, being part of the land area originally purchased from the Wappinger Indian tribe in the 1600s, and subsequently the site of action during the American Revolution. It sits directly across the river from West Point Military Academy.

The land has been owned and operated by The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary since 1930. The property was originally designed and used as a High School, and Seminary for. teaching young men to enter the Order. The Franciscan Friars will continue to own and reside on an adjoining 42 acres, which houses their Chapel, Friary and a new educational center for the Capuchin Youth & Family Ministry, currently under construction.

The Open Space Institute is a non-profit organization committed to protecting land and working to protect the environmental quality of communities. The 93 acres acquired by the OSI will be managed to maintain its open meadows providing crucial habitat for wildlife.
