Legend Yacht & Beach Club opens sales in Glen Cove, NY

Real Estate Weekly, Nov 24, 1999

Legend Yacht & Beach Club, an exclusive waterfront enclave of 46 distinctive homes with its own marina, boathouse club, private beach, shorefront swimming pool and indoor tennis court, has opened for sales.

Located on the fabled "Gold Coast" of Long Island's North Shore, Legend Yacht & Beach Club offers a stunning collection of three-, four- and five-bedroom single-family homes ranging in size from 2,800 to 5,000 square feet and priced from the high $700,000's to $2 million, depending on the location.

"Legend Yacht & Beach Club is a one-of-a-kind lifestyle neighborhood with one of the most spectacular waterfront locations in the region. If you live here, you don't need a second home in the Hamptons," said Mitchell C. Hochberg, president of Spectrum Skanska, Inc., the developer of Legend Yacht & Beach Club. "We're offering two homes in one -- a maintenance-free residence with the amenities of a premier vacation resort in a primary home location."

A gated community, Legend Yacht & Beach Club continues the Gold Coast tradition of sophisticated and elegant living with a wealth of unique amenities, including a private marina, an indoor tennis court, private beaches, a shorefront swimming pool and a Boathouse Club where you can relax in front of a woodburning fireplace or watch a breathtaking sunset.

Legend Yacht & Beach Club is conveniently located just minutes from the Long Island Railroad station and only 27 miles from Manhattan. Nearby are country clubs, fine restaurants, movie theaters and shopping along the famed "Miracle Mile."

Their are eight different home designs featuring a seaside shingle architecture reminiscent of 1920's Newport, Rhode Island. The interiors are characterized by a casual elegance, with bright and open living spaces, dramatic master bedroom suites downstairs and up, gourmet kitchens, large dining rooms, mid-level libraries, family rooms and walls of windows to capture the magnificent views of Long Island Sound.

The 46-acre waterfront property, once known as Pembroke, has a rich and colorful history dating back to 1914, when it was built by Captain Joseph Raphael De Lamar, a wealthy financier who made his fortune salvaging sunken ships and prospecting for gold and silver. Pembroke was built using building materials, furnishings, paintings and statues Captain De Lamar acquired from around the world. With 80 rooms and grand gardens, its was one of the largest and most extravagant mansions ever constructed on the North Shore of Long Island. It was the scene of many galas and lavish social gatherings.

In 1924, Pembroke was purchased by Marcus Loew, a pioneer in the motion picture industry and a founder of Metro-Goldwin Mayer. Over the years, movie stars such as Gloria Swanson and Elizabeth Taylor were frequent guests at Pembroke. In the early 1960's, the Loew family moved out of the mansion, and it was demolished in 1968. Today, Pembroke's original terra cotta tiled teahouse, indoor tennis court and pier remain. Majestic copper beeches and allays of maples still stand, recalling the beauty of Pembroke's famous gardens.
