"Big Apple Can" wins award
Real Estate Weekly, Dec 12, 2001
IBEX Construction picked up an award for its "Big Apple Can" sculpture at the 9th Annual "Canstruction[R]" Exhibit hosted at the New York Design Center. The annual exhibit brings together New York's top architectural and engineering firms to create dozens of food-can sculptures which will then be donated to a local food bank. IBEX Construction was the only contractor to take part in this year's exhibit.
Approximately 10 feet high, The "Big Apple Can" sculpture was developed by IBEX with assistance from Thanhauser and Esterson Architects. The sculpture is a cross section of the "Big Apple" with the New York City skyline affixed in the center. IBEX chose this design to show its support for New York City following the World Trade Center attacks and to emphasize that now more than ever, the Big Apple is a symbol of our great city.
"Although we're new to the Canstruction Exhibit," said Andy Frankl, president of IBEX Construction, "We feel that designing these exhibits is one way for us to use our knowledge to give back to the community -- and prevent hunger." "Showing support for our fellow New Yorkers is especially important during this difficult period," he added.
The Canstruction Exhibit is organized by the American Institute of Architects and the Society of Design Administration, is hosted by the New York Design Center, and benefits "Food for Survival," the New York City Food Bank. Fifty cities across the country are also hosting the exhibit this year which has a goal of raising 1.5 million pounds of food.
Canstruction's aim is to raise public awareness about hunger and demonstrate how the Design and Construction industry is giving back to the communities it builds.
