Cannon wins Sports Award

Real Estate Weekly, Jan 11, 2006

Cannon Design announced that its work on the Student University Recreation Center at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, has been recognized with a 2005 IOC/ IAKS Award by the International Association for Sports & Leisure Facilities.

The goal of transforming an outdated 1970s building into a facility that would create a new environment and a new image for campus recreation at Texas Christian University resulted in a $24 million comprehensive renovation and construction program totaling 235,00 s/f. Design of the University's new Student University Recreation Center included 114,000 s/f of new construction and 121,000 s/f of renovated and reconfigured space, doubling the size of the existing building, whose windowless pre-cast concrete structure was expanded, remodeled and reconfigured in inventive ways to better suit student life and the campus setting.

The majority of the new space is located to the east of the existing building nearest to the center of the campus. This sizable addition houses most of the large program space, including a three-court gym, racquetball courts, aerobics room and running track, as well as a new, dynamically shaped 12,000 s/f fitness center, which is the building's most visible and highly used space. Under the broadly curved copper roof, fully transparent glass walls provide views of people jogging, lifting weights and excercising within. At night, brighly illuminated, the Center acts as a beacon within the campus setting. In addition to the indoor facilities, a newly designed courtyard and recreation pool offer students several sports and leisure amenities.
