Fox & Fowle architect presents lecture at India's Urban Design Research Institute - Inside Construction
Real Estate Weekly, Jan 21, 2004
Sudhir S. Jambhekar, AIA, principal at Fox & Fowle Architects, has just returned from presenting a lecture at the Urban Design Research Institute in Mumbai, India.
In his address, entitled Current Work--Beyond Buildings, Jambhekar discussed the importance of improving the built environment through the creation of architecture. The conference marked an important development in architectural design education for the region (would love to say this or something like this).
"My design principals are based on the concept that all elements are part of the larger whole," said Jambhekar. "I approach each design as a perceptive search for meaning and usefulness, balancing the various forces at work in each to ensure that a perfect harmony exists between the newly built project and its surroundings."
An architect, urban designer and planner, Jambhekar has served as the lead designer on major projects including Manhattan's new Second Avenue Subway Line, the Lehman College Communication Center, and the new LCOR office building in Jamaica, Queens.
His projects have won numerous design awards, including a 2002 design award from American Institute of Architects (AIA) New Jersey for the Walter Rand Transportation Center Expansion and a 2001 Award of Merit from AIA New York State for the Jamaica Transportation Center.
The Society of American Registered Architects granted design awards to the Queens Museum of Art competition entry, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System and the Williamsburg Community Center competition entry. In addition, his designs for the Midtown East Development Plan and the Washington, D.C. Metro Station Canopy Program competition were honored with awards from the Boston Society of Architects in 2001. A graduate of the University of Bombay, Jambhekar earned his masters in architecture and urban design from Columbia University. He joined Fox & Fowle as a principal when the firm he co-founded, Jambhekar Strauss, merged with Fox & Fowle in 2000.
New York-based Fox & Fowle Architects, an architectural, interior design and planning firm, is currently at work on the Manhattan's new Second Avenue Subway; the Martin J. Whitman School of Management Building at Syracuse University; The Helena apartment building in Manhattan; and the adaptive reuse of the historic Lion House at the Bronx Zoo.
As long-time proponents of environmental conservatism, the firm designed New York City's first green office tower, the Conde Nast Building at Four Times Square. Fox & Fowle has recently been awarded the coveted Medal of Honor by the AIA New York Chapter, two design awards from AIA New York State, and a national AIA honor award.
