Annual Winter's Eve Ball Raisers Over $ 1.4 Million For National Jewish Medical and Research Center
Real Estate Weekly, Jan 26, 2000
One thousand members of the real estate and construction industries dined and danced their way through a wonderful evening that raised $1,262,935 for National Jewish. The highlight of the December 11,1999 event at the Grand Hyatl, which took place on the 100th anniversary of the day the institution opened its doors, was the awarding of the National Jewish Humanitarian Award to Richard B. Saltzman of Merrill Lynch & Co. Thomas M. Flexner of Bear, Stearns, & Co. was inducted as a National Trustee.
The leadership of this annual event reflected the broad support that National Jewish has enjoyed for decades from the real estate and construction industries. Lee S. Saltzman and Larry A. Silverstein served as diner chairmen, assited by co-chairman James D. Kuhn; Arthur J. Mirante, II; and Stephen B. Siegel. The honorary chairman were J. Warren Gorrell, Jr.; Alan L. Gosule; Benjamin F. Needell; and Eugene A. Pinover. Margaret A. Herman served as treasurer, while Peter Marchetto was the journal chairman. Wendy Siegel supervised the elaborate party arrangements, including the take-home favors. The grand prize, a London vacation for two, was provided by Blackstone Real Estate Advisors and Colony Capital, with first class airfare courtesy of American Airlines.
The theme for the gala evening was the centennial year of the non-profit, non-sectarian National Jewish, and the black tie crowd partook of food and entertainment with a decade-by-decade flavor. Proceeds from the dinner helped set up the Richard B. and Bette A. Saltzman Fund for Food and Other Allergies, which will be used for allergy research at National Jewish in the leading immunology laboratories in the country. For two years in a row, National Jewish has been ranked the number one hospital for respiratory care in America by U.S. News & World Report.
