CREWNY sponsors women's summer internship program
Real Estate Weekly, August 9, 2000
As part of a broadened educational and outreach mission, CREW*NY will offer seven high school women real estate internships at leading New York companies this summer. In addition to the jobs, the summer-long program will include presentations on the industry and a field trip to a construction site. The participating companies are: Clarion Partners; Cushman & Wakefield; Intertech Corp; Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hayes & Handler, LLP; The Clarett Group; Sygrove Associates, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
"A key article of our charter is to further women's educational expertise in the related fields of commercial real estate," said Victoria Kahn, President of CREW*NY, in making the announcement. "We're hoping that if we can get young women interested in real estate at an earlier age, their enthusiasm will transfer to some of their peers and we'll have a greater chance of expanding women's participation in the industry."
The seven young women were identified with the assistance of The Academy of Finance (AFI). Each year, the AFI identifies high-achieving high school students and introduces them to broad career opportunities in the financial services industry. "Real estate is a critical piece of the financial services industry," adds Kahn, "and part of our educational mission this year, is to reinforce this relationship."
Interns include: Virginia Li of Fort Hamilton High School who will intern with Victoria Kahn at Clarion Partners; Itzel Michan of The High School of Economics & Finance who will intern with Darcy Stacom at Cushman & Wakefield: Shirley Chu, of James Madison High School who will intern at Intertech Corp. with Orna Shulman; Christina Walsh-Lewis of John Dewey High School who will intern with Susan Rahm at Kaye Scholer; Dionne Norton of Adlai E. Stevenson High School who will intern with Veronica Hackett of The Clarett Group; Kamilah Holder of John Dewey High School who will intern with Marilyn Sygrove of Sygrove Associates, and Samia Ahmed of Adlai E. Stevenson High School who will intern with Cherri Nanninga of the Port Authority.
CREW*NY is a professional organization comprised of approximately 100 of the most senior women professionals actively involved in the commercial real estate industry in the New York area. Founded in 1988, its members are senior-level officers within their companies.
