Airport commission reviewing hotel proposal

Real Estate Weekly, March 7, 2001

The Republic Airport Commission is considering a proposal that would allow for the construction of a $20 million complex consisting of two four story hotels on airport property in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Commission hopes that the project would provide visitors with much needed overnight accommodations, while generating an additional $1 million annually for the town of Babylon in lieu of taxes.

Columbia Hospitality Group of Albany, N.Y., is proposing a 120-room Staybridge Suites by Holiday Inn and a 120-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel on five acres of state-owned property on the east side of Route 110. Staybridge is designed to be an extended stay facility, while the Courtyard is supposed to serve the overnight needs of business travelers.

Airport officials say a broad range of visitors arrive every week at Republic. With corporate activity up by 3%, the airport attracts travelers from a broad range of corporate America ranging from Heinz to Cablevision.
