IRFM Scholarships stimulate diversity in real estate management

Real Estate Weekly, May 2, 2001

Academic scholarships are available to minority college students from the Greater New York Chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management. IREM President Joe Scholes, CPM (Certified Property Manager), said the minority scholarship program plays a significant role in stimulating ethnic diversity in New York City's real estate management field.

The centerpiece of the IREM scholarship program is the prestigious George M. Brooker, CPM, Collegiate Scholarship for Minorities, which provides tuition assistance to minority undergraduate and graduate college students pursuing real estate management as a career. IREM provides one graduate-level award of $2,500 and two undergraduate-level awards of $1,000 each. This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Brooker, a former IREM Greater NY Chapter president and national IREM committee member.

In addition, IREM offers the George M. Brooker, CPM, Minority Memorial Book Scholarship, which provides a $500 award to a minority college student for the purchase of text books. While applicants for this scholarship need not be studying real estate management as a career pursuit, they are required to be a relative of someone in the real estate management industry.

Under the program, IREM also has available as many as 10 Minority Out reach Scholarships, which cover course tuition and provide a mentor for minorities in the real estate management field who are pursuing the prestigious CPM designation.
