New lighting installed in Union Square area thanks to BID
Real Estate Weekly, May 7, 2003
The 14th Street-Union Square LDC/BID announces the installation of new decorative sidewalk lighting on 14th and 17th Streets.
The new lighting was made possible with the help of Assembly Member Deborah J. Glick, who provided funds in the amount of $57,000, which will pay for lighting from Third to Fifth Avenues on 14th Street.
Assembly Member Steve Sanders also pledged support and has contributed funding of $92,000, which will pay for lighting from First to Third Avenues on 14th Street and will cover 17th Street between Park Avenue South and Union Square West.
The LDC/BID has had a strong commitment to improving street lighting throughout the neighborhood and actively campaigned for this lighting to increase neighborhood security and enhance the appearance of the tree-lined sidewalks in the Union Square area.
The elegant tear-drop shaped fixtures were designed to compliment the existing street lights and incorporate new energy-saving technology. Increased neighborhood lighting has been an ongoing LDC/BID initiative, with the first 28 custom made decorative lighting fixtures installed on 14th Street from Fifth to Seventh Avenues in 2002.
The 14th Street-Union Square LDC and BID are non-profit organizations that work to ensure the community's vibrancy as a center for business, culture and education and to improve the quality of life for its diverse residents.
The organizations facilitate economic development by spearheading educational, economic development and park projects and acting as a liaison between community, business and government leaders.
