Kids stuff at Center for Architecture

Real Estate Weekly, May 25, 2005

On view at the Center for Architecture is "Explorations into the Built Environment" showcasing work completed by K-12 students in the Center for Architecture Foundation's education programs.

The Foundation is the charitable affiliate of the AIA New York Chapter and manages one of the leading arts education programs in the New York City school system, reaching out to more than 2,500 students and hundreds of educators each year. The opening of the Center in 2003 enabled the Center for Architecture Foundation to expand its programs, including the introduction of in-house activities related to its calendar of design-related exhibitions and events.

"Center for Architecture Foundation programs have reached over 1,500 students this school year alone. Design work from all age groups, abilities and backgrounds will be on display," said Walter Hunt, FAIA, foundation president. "This exhibition shows us how design education can tap into the creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness of young people."

Students from public and private schools throughout City are represented in the exhibition, as well as projects completed in collaboration with New York's leading museums and cultural institutions. Exploring man-made spaces and the built environment, the students' work proposes creative designs for change and demonstrates their innovation in tackling such projects as redesigning neighborhood homes, stores, streets, and blocks.
