U.S. Tennis Assoc. to renovate center dining room

Real Estate Weekly, June 4, 2003

After a comprehensive search of architecture and design firms, the United States Tennis Association has awarded the re-design and renovation of the players and coaches dining room at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York to Haverson Architecture and Design, P.C. of Greenwich, Conn. The initial schematic design phase will begin immediately to reach the goal of completion prior to the US Open Tennis Championships in August, 2003.

Haverson Architecture and Design, P.C., a ten year old firm of design Professionals, headed by the husband and wife architect/graphic designer team, Jay and Carolyn Haverson, have completed the restaurant interiors of rm, Rick Moonen's seafood restaurant in New York City, Nyla at the Dylan Hotel in New York City and the Chicago, Philadelphia, Columbus, and Dallas locations of Smith & Wollensky restaurants, as well as, the Harley Davidson Cafe in Las Vegas and Motown Cafe, Citiwalk at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

"To bring a human scale and sense of color and material to the existing 5,000-SF space, 300-seat dining room, five storied high ceiling, we'll add a sweeping shear drape suspended from the ceiling. This will create an atmosphere more inviting and warmer," comments Jay Haverson. "The tennis players and coaches need a dining area close to the game, but with an ambiance that provides psychological relief from the competitive pressure," notes Carolyn Haverson. The Haversons will incorporate platform areas, dining booths, banquettes, and a patterned carpet floor covering into the design renovation to ensure the space feels and looks like a dining room and not a dining hall.
