Brooklyn College breaks ground on new West Quad

Real Estate Weekly, June 14, 2006

Brooklyn College broke ground for a new $115 million West Quad designed by celebrated and award-winning architect, Rafael Vinoly.

The new building will house the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science, state-of-the-art athletic facilities, and a number of student services departments including admissions, financial aid, scholarships, registration, and the bursar's office. The project is being financed by state funds.

In attendance at the ceremony were Brooklyn College President Christoph M. Kimmich; City University of New York Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management, Emma Macari; Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz; Assistant Speaker of the New York State Assembly Rhoda Jacobs; and Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein.

The West Quad Project draws inspiration from the original 1937 architectural design of the Brooklyn College campus. It offers the college an opportunity to improve its student services, academic programs, and infrastructure, with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, while maintaining its classical design elements.

"This building is the product of much effort and enthusiasm, and the exquisite help of many. Seventy years after we broke ground on the first building on this campus, Brooklyn College takes enormous pleasure in acknowledging the participation of so many individuals whose efforts have made this day possible. Our advocates here at home and in Albany who have always been generous with their time and their support, the architects and construction staff, and the colleagues at The City University and here at Brooklyn College" said President Kimmich.

The building will feature a swimming pool and high-diving board, competition and practice gyms, a dance studio, racquetball courts, a fitness center, and teaching and research labs. For a nominal fee, members of the community will have access to these facilities. The building is scheduled for completion in 2008.
