Furniture store opens in Chelsea

Real Estate Weekly, June 26, 2002

Basics Furniture, a popular contemporary home furnishings store, has signed a lease for a new store and showroom at 19th Street and Seventh Avenue in Chelsea, its second location in Manhattan, according to Ariel Schuster, associate at Robert K. Futterman & Associates, LLC (RKF).

The new 3,685-SF showroom, designed by renowned architect Johnson Chou, will feature 12-foot ceilings, large windows and an expansive space where shoppers can view a wide selection of innovative furniture and accessories, including new lines in leather and glass. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to custom design certain pieces in the showroom.

"Basics Furniture offers affordable, contemporary furnishings that are a perfect fit for New York living," said Schuster, who represented both the tenant and the landlord in the transaction. "Having opened its first location at 92 Seventh Ave. six years ago, Basics has established a large client base in the Chelsea area and throughout Manhattan. This exciting new showroom will give Basics the opportunity to better serve its customers and expand its brand."

Basics Furniture's new store and showroom, expected to open in September 2002, will be one of several retailers at the Westminster, The Related Companies' new 254 unit luxury rental building.
