Skanska gets dorm project

The New York division of Skanska USA Building Inc. has been named construction manager for a new dormitory building at the Maritime College, a specialized college of the State University of New York in Throggs Neck. The project is being developed in conjunction with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

The new 300-bed residence hall will be a four-story steel structure, built on a steel pile supported concrete foundation. A masonry and stone facade will complement the surrounding campus structures and the fort's massive stone facade. At the rear of the building, sections of glass curtainwall will be installed so that the students can take in views of Long Island Sound while relaxing in anyone of the centrally located lounge areas. This building will also provide needed handicap accessible room suites.

The Skanska team will provide full pre-construction services, including cost estimation, value engineering, and constructibility reviews in order to ensure project success. Skanska, in conjunction with DASNY and the architect, will thoroughly plan every aspect of the project, including a mockup dormitory room The room will be constructed with the intent of working out the de sign and construction issues with a single room before the construction of all other rooms begins. This will allow to eliminate confusion and delays.

The project is being built on a fast-track basis, with completion scheduled for August 2004. The project architect is Mach Architecture & Engineering, P.C.
