Meltzer/Mandl Architects wins excellence award
Real Estate Weekly, July 9, 2003
Meltzer/Mandl Architects of NYC were presented with the Award of Excellence in the New York Council Society of American Registered Architects Eighth Annual Design Awards Program on June 24. The awards ceremony was held at a gala reception at the 200 Fifth Club, 200 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
The award is for work done by Meltzer/Mandl for the Bond Street Lofts at 57 Bond St., a six-story condominium built at the corner of Bond Street and the Bowery. The developer is Alchemy Properties, also of NYC. Principal architect on the project is Marvin H. Meltzer, a vice-president at Meltzer/Mandl.
"Since this neighborhood has industrial roots and this is one of the first new residential buildings in the area, I saw the project as an opportunity to introduce a new architectural vocabulary for multi-family residential buildings," said Meltzer.
The $7 million, 27,560-SF building is a mid-rise tower with two setbacks. The building's main volume, a curving four-story mass, is clad in aluminum and glass on the exterior. On each floor, large, 20-foot long windows overlook the Bowery to the south. In addition to spacious, luxury condominiums, 57 Bond St. contains 7,800 SF of street-front retail space.
"I also wanted to keep a feel of the old ambience," said Meltzer. A low stone wall with round columns runs along the Bond Street front; its traditional material and human scale firmly fixing the project in the midrise tradition."
